Bushfires in Victoria

G'day maties
We're very sad and distressed over the massive bushfires that have devastated the state of Victoria here in Oz. D & B have friends in the area including Brooke, Greg, Charlie & Opy. Thankfully all are accounted for and safe. So many others were not so lucky. The last count was 173 dead, and this is expected to rise, nearly 1000 homes destroyed and god knows the number of animals that have lost their lives. It's heartbreaking and unbelievable. The stories that have come through are distressing. So many didn't stand a chance as there was just no time to escape.
Horrific stories of people trying to leave affected areas by car and being engulfed by the flames. Just horrible.
The sheer scale of these fires is beyond comprehension. Sadly they still rage and could take weeks to contain.
Whole towns are gone, once idyllic little communities are now just ash. So many families and friends hearing the devastating news they didn't want to hear. Their loved ones gone. Hundreds now homeless and simply left with what they were wearing and others critically burnt.
The whole of the south eastern corner of the country was warned that last Saturday was going to be hot and the risk of fire extreme but no one could see this coming. It came across so quick and from all sides. The people living there truly did the best they could but they were overwhelmed.
Some of the fires were started by lightning strikes. Unbelievably others were deliberately lit. God knows how anyone could do that.

We'd like to thank those of you concerned for our safety. We are well and truly far from the NSW/Victorian border and thankfully there are no fires burning in the Blue Mountains where we live.
Our airedale friends Baz & Ellie and their pinkies live on the outskirts of Melbourne. They are close but not under any threat at this stage. Brooke & Greg were very close to one of the fires but from what I was told the wind changed direction and the fire turned away from them.
Another close friend had the fire come to the boundary of her property. Thankfully they were able to save their house and their airedales.

Australia suffers bushfires every year. It's the nature of the place but none have come close to this. It is clearly Australia's worst natural disaster.

Noah, I'm SO HAPPY to hear that you all are safe. We've been watching this on the news and are really devastated at how horrible this all is.

We've just made a donation to the RSPCA from a link on Asta (Down Under)'s site: http://www.rspcavic.org/campaigns_news/news_bushfires.htm

We've seen footage on the news of what's happening there in SE Austrlia and you are in our thought and prayers. We're glad you weren't directly inpacted by it,but understand your sadness for the area that was burnt. We get some pretty bad wild fires here in Arizona and the SW USA in the summer too. It's always depressing. And worse when the cause is humans. XO,BabyRD & Hootie

Hi Noah,
It is terrible news coming out of Victoria, isn't it. I heard this morning that my Ann and Ron of Old Iron lost their home - all the airedales and the humans got away okay. That was my birthplace - glad they are all okay, I'm afraid so many other dogs (and every other kind of creature) were not so lucky. Glad I don't live in the bush anymore!

Thank you Noah and Family for updating us.

I have been terribly worried since I had not heard from Brooke, until yesterday morning when she left a message in Marv's Chat Box.

Thankfully it was good news. The tv pictures and stories of human tragedy have moved me to tears.

I am so relieved to get a wee bit more information, I am glad you are safe although I realised it was quite a way from your stomping ground.

Also relieved to hear B and G and the Pups are okay, although they had a narrow escape.

I will keep watching the news and thinking of you all.

Thank you again for some information about all this.

lots of love, from Jeannie xxxxxx
I just wish I could parcel some of our blooming snow and ice up and post it over to you. It was minus 3 degrees this morning, although the sun is out so hopefully it will soon be melting.

Thank you again.

We have heard from other DWBers that you guys are no where near the fire. Thank goodness that you are safe. We are very glad that Opy and Charlie, Brooke and Greg were safe too.

While reading Opy's blog about how they were saved by the change of wind direction was like taking a roller coaster ride. I can imagine how terrifying it must be for them at that point in time.

Its beyond us to understand why some nutty people would set fire I hope those people will be caught and receive the punishment they deserve.

Stay safe.

Mommy and I have been watching the news intently! We are horrified by the fires! We live in Southern California so we've been around our fair share of fires, but the ones in Victoria have been devastating! We are so sad for the loss of life and homes!! And we are horrified that humans could deliberately set these fires!

We are very glad you are all safe!! And we hope the fires are contained very soon!!

We saw the touching scene of the fireman and the koala bear! Mom cried watching it!!

Hi Noah, Tess, Willow & Lucy,

Yes it is absolutely terribe. We feel really bad for everyone who lost their homes or worse.
With all the technology available today it makes you wonder how something like this could happen.

They're gonna build a big 747 like the U.S one in time for next fire season but the damage is already done now. Too little, too late.
I don't know if we'll ever get over this.

Our hearts are truly broken
